I cross posted this from the Kindred Spirits blog for those who don't read there but have animals or friends/family with animals who might be effected....

Some of you may have heard already, there has been a Nation-wide recall announced for some canned and pouch cat and dog foods.  Please take a good look at any foods you currently have to make sure it is not included in the recall. (link below) There are many of the majors on the list (Iams, Science Diet, Nutro) so it never hurts to just check.

The contaminated foods have caused dogs and cats to become sick, "showing signs of kidney failure."  Symptoms include drinking a lot, vomiting, loss of appetite, and lethargy.

This is one of the many reasons I stopped feeding mass produced products and switched to a natural diet. The research I have been doing for several years has been pointing in this direction. It was only a matter of time. It is unfortunate to say but most veterinarians recieve large profits for promoting some of these products. Many were not given the nutritional educational in school and are at the mercy of pet food companies who are generally in the business to make profits.

If change is to be made it is going to have to come from animal guardians educating themselves and demanding a higher standard of fare for our beloved companions. Think of it this way, you wouldn't feed your human baby the same highly processed, chemically tainted kibbled or canned food everyday for the rest of their life. So why would you do that to your animal family member? They need a diet based on whole foods and variation just like we do for optimal wellness.

Do let me know if I can answer any of your questions or make suggestions for alternate products. I will be blogging about this information as I learn more if you are interested. I will also be offering alternatives to such products at the Kindred Spirits blog.

To better educate yourself, I offer a few book recommendations that have very valuable infomation about animal wellness, vaccination side-effects, natural diet, etc.

This could actually turn out to be something very positive. It is bringing attention to a subject that is long over due. These foods have been killing animals very slowly for many years now. This "contamination" is just a demonstration of the side-effects that have been "sped up". Lets intend that animals stay well through the recall and that more people become proactive about standards being raised to benefit our animal companions.

Thanks so much for spreading the word,
Shelly

Shelly!  I've already heard about the pet food recall, but I knew nothing about the potential issues with the whole industry in general :-/  I felt horrible when I saw the list and thought of how just one different decision in the past could have had my kitty friends on the danger list; now to think that it could happen to any brand at any time…

I'd love to hear more about alternatives!!  I think I'm going to check out the Food Pets Die For book - thank you so much!!
